סוכה א:ג

פֵּרַס עָלֶיהָ סָדִין מִפְּנֵי הַחַמָּה, אוֹ תַּחְתֶּיהָ מִפְּנֵי הַנְּשָׁר

אוֹ שֶׁפֵּרַס עַל גַּבֵּי הַקִּינוֹף, פְּסוּלָה

אֲבָל פּוֹרֵס הוּא עַל גַּבֵּי נַקְלִיטֵי הַמִּטָּה

Since the main part of a Sukkah is the Schach, one must be able to sit directly under them. If the Schach are obstructed in any manner, the Sukkah would not be usable for the Mitzvah. However, if the Schach are only blocked by a sheet hanging over a 2 pointed bedpost, it is not like a real block.
